Income tax, and the petroleum carve-out
The UK–Malta convention was signed on 12 May 1994 and entered into force on 27 March 1995. It takes effect in Malta from 1 January 1996. In the UK it takes effect from 6 April 1996 for income tax and capital gains tax, and from 1 April 1996 for corporation tax. The Multilateral Instrument later modified the text.

Article 2 names one Malta tax: income tax. The same article says the convention does not apply to tax paid or payable in Malta under subsection (11) of section 31 of the Income Tax Act (Cap. 123) on the chargeable income of a person engaged in the production of petroleum produced in Malta, or a substantially similar later provision. That carve-out is specific to this convention. The Commissioner for Revenue assesses Maltese income tax. A Companies House certificate does not file it.
A resident’s Maltese identity card (karta tal-identità) accompanies the passport. Address proof should show a Maltese address: a recent ARMS or Enemalta bill, or a statement from a bank in Malta. The Malta Business Registry is a separate register from Companies House. English and Maltese are both official languages. The Maltese page is written as its own text.
